Hadith Number 3

The Prophet (Sallalahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) and his Ummah’s bearing witness on the day of Judgement

Al-Imam Taqiudin Abu Muhammad Isma’il Ibn Ibrahim Ibn Abi al-Yasar at-Tanukhi reported to us and I read it to him and I heard it from him in the year 669 Hijri: Abu Tahir Barakat Ibn Ibrahim Ibn Tahir al-Khushu’i reported to us and I read it to him: Abu Muhammad Abdul Karim Ibn Hamza Ibn al-Khadar as-Sulami reported to us: Abul Husayn Tahir Ibn Ahmad Ibn Ali Ibn Mahmud al-Mahmudi al-‘Ani reported to us: Abul Fadl Mansur Ibn Nasr Ibn Abdurahim Ibn Mat[1] al-Kagidi reported to us: Abu Amr al-Hasan Ibn Ali Ibn al-Hasan al-Atar narrated to us: Ibrahim Ibn Abdullah Ibn Umar Ibn Bukayr Ibn al-Harith al-Abasi[2] narrated to us: Waki Ibn al-Jarah Ibn Mali jar-Ru’asi narrated to us: from al-‘Amash from Abu Salih from Abu Sa’id al-Khudri he said the Messenger of Allah (Salallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) said,

“Noah (Alayhisalam) will be brought (before Allah) on the Day of Resurrection, and will be asked, ‘Did you convey the message of Allah?” He will reply, ‘Yes.’ And then Noah’s nation will be asked, ‘Did he (Noah) convey Allah’s message to you?’ They will reply, ‘No warner came to us and no one came to us (at all).’ Then Noah will be asked, ‘Who are your witnesses?’ He will reply. ‘(My witnesses are) Muhammad (Sallalahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) and his followers.’ Then (he said) the saying (in the Quran)

“And thus We have made of you (Muslims) a middle nation” (Surah al-Baqarah ayah 143)

he said al-Wasat (the middle (not too high and not too low): (means) al-Adl (the moderate)

He was born in the year 589 Hijri and died in the year 682 Hijri in the month of Safar


This narration is present in Imam Waki’ Ibn al-Jarah’s Juz from A’mash (hadith no.26) and Hafidh Ibn Taymiyah has mentioned it from there from his own chain of narration (sanad).

Also Imam Bukhari has narrated it with this understanding from (the chain) Abu Usama said it was narrated to us from al-A’mash who said it was narrated to us from Abu Salih from Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (Radi Allahu Anhu) (Sahih Bukhari no.7349)

1. This hadith establishes that the kufar, mushrikin and other than them will speak lies on the day of judgement, and it says in the Quran, “‘By Allah, our Rab, we were not polytheists.’ “(Surah al-‘An’am ayah no.23)

Then they will say, “See how they will lie about themselves” to the end of the ayah (Surah al-An’am ayah no.24)

The narration mentioned by Hafidh Ibn Taymiyah is also in Sahih Bukhari which has been described and explained in the Tahqiq and Takhrij and Abu Mu’awiya adh-Darir mentioned it by saying Sulayman Ibn Mihran al-A’mash narrated it to us and there is also the additional wording (for the hadith) below:

“Then it will be said to them: How do you know about this? Then they will say: Our Prophet (Sallalahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) came to us and told us that the Messengers (Alayhisalam) informed about the religion to their people. (Musnad Ahmad 3/58 hadith 11558, and its chain is on the conditions of Bukhari)

3. The unanimous testimony (in praising and criticising of narrators) by the noble scholars of hadith is a proof in the (science of) biographies of (the narrators in hadith) men and the science of hadith. Putting into consideration the introduction of Sahih Muslim etc. regarding differences (of opinion in the trustworthiness) in narrators, our position is always giving preference to the majority of the muhadithin in the scenario where we can’t harmonise and reconcile. And this is what our hearts and lives act upon. Wal-Hamdullilah


Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (Radi Allahu Anhu)

A Summarised comprehensive discussion of Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (Radi Allahu Anhu) is as follows:

Name and lineage:

Abu Sa’id Sa’d Ibn Malik Ibn Sinan Ibn Tha’laba Ibn Ubayd Ibn al-Bajr (Khudhra) Ibn Awf Ibn al-Harith Ibn al-Khazraj al-Khazraji al-Ansari (Radi Allahu Anhu)  

His father Malik Ibn Sinan (Radi Allahu Anhu) was martyred during the battle of Uhud and he was present in the battle of the Khandaq and the pledge of allegiance of ar-Ridwan.


Ibn Umar (Radi Allahu Anhu), Jabir (Radi Allahu Anhu), Anas Ibn Malik (Radi Allahu Anhu), ‘Amir Ibn Sa’d Ibn Abi Waqas, Abu Salama Ibn Abdurahman Ibn Awf, Abu Salih as-Saman, Sa’id Ibn al-Musayib, Abdurahman Ibn Abi Sa’id al-Khudri, Ubaydullah Ibn Abdullah Ibn Utbah, Ata Ibn Yazid al-Laythi, Ata Ibn Yasar, Muhammad Ibn Ali al-Baqir and Sa’id Ibn Jubayr and other than them Rahimahullah.


  1. A Companion of the Messenger of Allah (Sallalahu Alayhi Was-Sallam)
  2. He is an Ansari
  3. He participated in the battle of the Khandaq
  4. He was present in the pledge of allegiance at ar-Ridwan
  5. A big muhadith and well known famous Faqih
  6. During the incident of Hira (when the Yazidi army attacked Madina) a person from Sham wanted to kill him. When the person from Sham entered the cave towards him (for the intention of killing him) then Abu Sa’id al-Khudri threw his sword down and got ready to be martyred (See Tarikh Khalifa Ibn Khiyat page no.239 and its chain is authentic)

However Allah saved him from the evil of this person from Sham. From this (incident) it is established that he was extremely against killing muslims.  

  1. Once Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (Radi Allahu Anhu) entered the Masjid on the day of Jumah and started to pray (2 rakahs). Marwan Ibn Hakam’s soldiers tried to make him sit down (and not pray these 2 rakahs) however he didn’t listen to them and finished praying. Then he said, I can’t leave these (2 rakahs) since I have seen the Messenger of Allah (Sallalahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) (emphasise in) doing this. (Sunan at-Tirmidhi:no.511 and he said, “Hasan Sahih” and the hadith is Hasan)

It is established from this that he wasn’t scared of anyone when following the Sunnah. (Radi Allahu Anhu).

Knowledge of narrations:

There are 1170 narrations of his in the Musnad of Baqi Ibn Makhlad and there are 43 hadiths (narrated by him) in the Sahihayn.

There are 3 narrations from him in al-Arba’un fi al-Hath alal Jihad of Ibn Asakir, no.7; no.11 and no.19


There are different sayings about (the date of) his death: 63 Hijri, 64 Hijri, 65 Hijri and 74 Hijri. The most correct saying from all these is 64 Hijri. (Radi Allahu Anhu) (and Allah knows best)
